Serve to Learn
Touch a child’s life in a unique way
by teaching English in Egypt through Coptic Orphans.
Serve to Learn 2008
Friday, June 27, 2008 – Sunday, July
20, 2008
Please use this time to start preparing. Here
are some suggestions:
* Start spiritually preparing and praying for the
service;
* Look into how much vacation time you have at work;
* Make sure your passport is valid;
* Research procedures for obtaining a visa for Egypt;
* Research the cost of the airline tickets;
* Start saving for the airline ticket and the program fees;
* Start looking for individuals and companies to sponsor the costs
of the trip.
Serve to Learn is a unique opportunity
that allows volunteers to serve in high-poverty areas of Egypt by volunteering
to teach a dynamic English summer course to children. Volunteers come
not only to teach the children English (and have fun doing it), but
also that the volunteers themselves will learn even more from the children
they serve. As one volunteer from the 2003 program so aptly put it, “we
went to teach, but in the end, it was we who learned.”
The typical day
for a Serve to Learn volunteer begins with a morning session devoted
to English classes for orphans that are in the Coptic Orphans’
Not Alone program. The afternoon session offers classes for all other
interested children in the community. In the evening, volunteers visit
the homes of orphaned children to develop closer relationships with
them and to gain a fuller understanding of the poverty in which so many
children in Egypt live.
The volunteers are asked to think creatively about how to
teach English to the children. Their purpose is to nurture a more positive
learning environment for the children and inspire a love of learning
within them. This is an opportunity not only for Egyptian children, who
start learning English from the first grade, to learn English from a
native speaker, but to have an enjoyable classroom experience that they
do not always have during the academic year.
Serve to Learn volunteers will be prepared prior to their
arrival to Egypt through a series of preparation assignments that cover
cross-cultural understanding, teaching English as a foreign language,
classroom management, education in Egypt, and other relevant topics.
Volunteers will also receive a one-day orientation in Cairo before beginning
their work.
