In August, two Reps from Cairo found a creative way
to talk about difficult family issues with mothers participating
in Not Alone, the flagship program of Coptic Orphans. “What
we could not communicate before we now saw openly discussed,” one
rep commented afterwards.
“Since your father died, I can’t support you anymore,” a
mother used to frequently chide her child. Then, she attended the
workshop that the two Reps organized. She participated in dramatic
skits that the Reps organized and scripted about family life, and
talked with mothers about various issues such as discipline techniques,
involvement in their children’s lives, and talking constructively
with their children about the death of their fathers. Ever since,
her relationship with her son has been completely different:
cooperative, respectful, and free of the frequent conflicts that
used to frustrate
her.
Coptic Orphans has always believed that we learn best
from one another. We build this participatory approach into everything
we do. Our Reps work together and share with one another to
encourage
creativity, and nurture the creative resources that every participating
child or family in our program has for positive change.
Help
us reach more fatherless families in Egypt with resources for
creative change.
