In August, two Reps from Cairo found a creative way to
talk about difficult family issues with mothers participating in Not
Alone, the flagship program of Coptic Orphans. “What we could
not communicate before we now saw openly discussed,” one rep
commented afterwards.
The Reps had often noticed the challenge of addressing
ways in which family life could be improved for participating mothers
and their children. They decided to gather mothers together for a workshop
in which the mothers dramatically act out various scenarios touching
on different family life dynamics and then talk together about the
skit afterwards. The mothers talked about various issues such as discipline
techniques, involvement in their child’s life, and talking constructively
with their children about the death of their fathers.
In the skits and discussions, many mothers had moments
of realization about their own family life and learned practical ways
to improve their relationships with their children from the Reps and
from one another.
Coptic Orphans has always believed that we learn best from
one another. We build this participatory approach into everything we
do. Our Reps work together and share with one another to encourage
creativity, and nurture the creative resources that every participating
child or family in our program has for positive change.
